Hi Phil. I read the article from Policy Tensor carefully, and then talked to Claude about it. It does seem that Iran has shown significant vulnerabilities in the U.S. military. The thing is, the UAE wants near perfect protection, and in any war you're never going to have that. Do they really want to live under a dominant Iran in their region? Do they want Iran funding insurgents in their nations? Wouldn't they prefer if the Iranian people overthrew the regime and established a more peaceful, Western focused nation?
My take on the Tensor article - assuming it is largely correct - is that while this is short term bad news for the U.S., long term it should be good news. Trump will end hostilities in short order, China will force Iran to back down, and things will go back to normal - except that now everybody who seriously looks at this will know the U.S. has some major failings. For instance, it is crazy that the THADD system is so vulnerable.
Confronted with these failings, Trump and Hegseth - in my view - will pivot to changing our military to handle these failings. If they don't, then China will take advantage of these weaknesses to our disadvantage. There are plenty of things we can do - and this is where the Tensor article fails. It fails to anticipate how having systems proven vulnerable will push the U.S. to change - dramatically.
